The forged cutlery of Eichenlaub has existed since the end of the 19th century. Until 1910 only consisting of knife and fork, it was known as a regional vesper cutlery in the Bergisches Land region. It was only August Merten, the founder of the brand "Eichenlaub", who succeeded in bringing the cutlery into a series, beginning with the addition of a spoon. Step by step a complete line with table, dessert, fruit and serving parts was created.
With the “Eichenlaub” symbol, the cutlery won over its lovers in the upper middle classes and spread beyond the German borders to various European countries. The Eichenlaub logo, a combination of two stylized oak leaves with the initials of company founder Merten "M", became increasingly well-known. Since then, the significant design has often been copied in large numbers.
Since 1998, when the brand and its founding company were taken over by the Windmühlenmesser-Manufactur, the original is still manufactured there. All parts are manufactured in complex handwork from genuine forged steel, finely processed, ground and finally polished again by hand or matted. Special importance is attached to the processing of the forks, which are really still so spiky by a careful all around processing and repulsion of the points that one can easily skewer a piece of meat.
The current assortment includes more than 40 pieces - cutlery as well as small and large menu cutlery. The handles are available in a selection of 12 variants. The handles are always individually made according to the wishes of our customers.
Since 2003 the manufactory have been continuously training young people in the traditional handicrafts of cutlery production, such as cutlery grinders and cutlery cutters (for handle assembly and finishing). Their skill, attention to detail and quality awareness contribute significantly to the preservation of this traditional cutlery of German table culture.
